They tied red bandanas around their necks and marched as one during the Battle of Blair Mountain, the biggest labor uprising America’s ever seen. Over 10,000 strong, they faced off against hired guns and even bombs dropped from planes. Race didn’t split them; their fight for fairness united them.

Mother Jones, a firebrand who rallied those miners, didn’t mince words. She told them straight: “You are a lot of dirty cowards… you haven’t got enough marrow in your backbone to grease two black cats’ tails.” She wasn’t there to coddle—she was there to wake them up, to push them to stand tall together.
